The FEMA handbook has all of the information you need for creation of combustion from renewable resources (aka wood). I will get you guys a link later so you can see how to run diesel generators from burning wood.

 

As for distillation of water, you are 100% correct that it is simple to distill your own drinking water. Evaporation of dirty water through heat (boiling), creating condensation which then drips back down into a water catch, and then consuming is 100% safe in almost every circumstance due to the shift of the dirty water to pure gaseous H²O and then back to a pure liquid H²O state. This takes a lot of time and requires a fire that may give away your position via smoke.

 

Distillation via diatomaceous earth or other types of fine grain distillation capable substances require those substances to be on hand and they either weigh more than you want to carry or in a dry state take up too much volume. So they become options for situations where you know you won't be on the move.

 

Your best bet if you are planning for the long-term on the move scenario is going to be having a portable system like the one I posted, but you can definitely have a cheaper solution at the ready and make sure you have a scavenging plan that focuses on finding a better long-term solution as a priority.

 

FYI: My BOB right now consists of my XDM .45, some extra ammo, compass, 7x scope, flashlight, 2x Gerber Mulititool, and whatever odds and ends I might need for the time of the year it happens to be. Other than that, I am stuck with my wits and brutality...not something I actually look forward to as I prefer a zen state of mind and pacifism these days (weird for Striker right?)
