Never played AC but I don't really like Asian mecha (yes, I understand the irony of what I'm about to say, thanks). I was always much more into BattleTech. Heavy Gear wasn't bad either I guess.

Heavy Gear was a favorite of mine, I liked the computer games too.

Mechwarrior was my favorite online game ever. I think it was Mechwarrior 3. I belive Mech 4 was closer to the board game. It was my first introduction to clan PvP online. We had a ranking system and online tournements. Great fun. Was a member of a clan called the Black Nights.
Really liked the aspect of being able to build the perfect 4 person load out. 2 fast scouts that could run around an harry the enemy and then engage with the big guns. PvP with a scout was an artform. Dash in and get a few MG hits and run back out of range. Look for the leg hit. Once you you crippled one of the big guys then your buddy and you were like a pack of wolves on a crippled animal.

I love mechwarrior. It is an amazing game. I would spend hours playing the solo campaigns, and playing vs. AI. I played all of my Mechwarrior before I had cable internet so I rarely ever played it with other people sadly.

Yeah, it the transition from Mw3 to Mw4 was insane. With all of the lag shooting in mw3 smaller mechs with tons of lasers dominated and then 70-75 tonners with dual UAC-20s for the knockdown and then a pump or two to end it. In that game I always went with large mechs which were really, really hard to do well with.
Once Mw4 came out though and lag shooting was a thing of the past the assault mechs began to dominate. It was around the time that Mercs came out that I switched to medium mechs full time. I basically ran around in Hellspawns, Dragons, Bushwackers, and especially Hunchbacks. I also got really hardcore into 3025 tech so no matter what server I played on (usually NBT ones, specifically Sunder because it was mission play only) I ran with medium mechs using level 1 tech.
I'll toot my horn. I dominated that game. It was probably the one game I've ever played where I was one of the best out there (having a Saitek X45 at the time helped). But often times on a few particular mission maps, Griffon Base I think, I could lead the scoreboard with an Urban mech that had two small lasers, an AC-20, and jets.
The good news is that Weismann, who originally came up with BattleTech and later created FASA, has gotten the license for Mechwarrior back for his new company called Smith & Tinker which means a new Mechwarrior might be a possibility.
For those not willing to wait there are a group of modders making a total conversion for Crysis called Mechwarrior: Living Legends (http://mechlivinglegends.net/). They've made a lot of progress and are pretty far into it at this point.
At any rate, that mod is basically the last, best hope for mechwarriors for the next five or so years. Let's hope they do it.
